1. Personal Video Habits
What I Like to Watch
I tend to end my days either watching a show or a YouTube video or something of the sort. Usually it's what I do when I'm winding down and getting ready to go to sleep. Depending on the day or week, I usually go through phases of what I watch. Contrary to a lot of my friends, I can't start a new show in the middle of watching another one. I have to completely finish a show (unless the whole show hasn't finished airing yet) before I start a new one. I have so many friends that are still technically in the middle of at least 4 or 5 different shows. I like to finish them completely!
One of my favorite genres is true crime or a good mystery. And I'm kind of particular about the true crime that I like, too. I really like the missing person cases. Mostly because I'm fascinated by the thought of the missing person still being alive and walking around the earth today. I like that it's not just a closed case that they were killed or that something sinister actually happened to them. The glimmer of hope that comes with a missing person case is eerily fascinating to me. Murder cases are also interesting to me but a lot of times, there are a lot of gruesome details that are involved and they're so final and hopeless. They usually just sort of sadden me.
One of my favorite ways to watch missing person cases is on YouTube with Buzzfeed Unsolved. I really like this series because it's not only super informative, but it also has a lot of comic relief throughout it as hosts, Ryan Bergara and Shane Madej keep it light while also including all of the creepy details and graphics.
Like I stated earlier, I also like to keep one show going that I watch before bed some nights. Whether that be on Hulu or Netflix, it really depends on what show I'm wanting to watch. One of my favorite shows I've ever watched is Jane the Virgin. Seriously, it's so good. And I have a lot of favorites, but I could watch this show again and again. I finished it this past summer, and have yet to find a show that I love as much. What makes a show great for me is to be unpredictable, not cheesy, elements of mystery, humor, and even drama. Jane the Virgin does just that, and that is why it's been one of my favorite shows that I've had the pleasure watching as a part of my streaming and binging habits.
Other than that, I've watched a lot of shows that are considered pretty popular right now among my generation and other generations. That includes, The Office and New Girl (which I still put on for good background TV from time to time), Gilmore Girls, You, Friends, The Wonder Years, and Stranger Things, Desperate Housewives, (the list goes on!) The Wonder Years is one of my all-time favorites. I love how nostalgic it is. It's one of those shows that I used to watch with my mom, and now it's really nostalgic for me and just one of those good comfort shows. It never gets old to me, and it's such a feel good show.
Reality TV is also something I get into as well. Of course, a guilty pleasure is The Bachelor(ette), but I haven't kept up with that in about 4 seasons or so. I've just recently gotten back into it kind of with the start of this new season. Another show I just started watching and didn't expect to like that much is America's Next Top Model, and I mainly started watching it for good background TV that I didn't really have to pay much attention to. But one of my favorite reality shows of all time is CBS's Survivor. I watch that with my fiancé and my family every season, and we are obsessed! We even have a Survivor finale party with some family friends of ours, and we cook a big dinner and watch it all together. There's a new season about to start in a couple of weeks, and I'm so excited to watch.
I have pretty regular video habits, I must say, and seeing them all written out like this sounds kind of crazy in a way. Our generation is so invested in what we watch; it's become such a social norm and even a typical conversation starter: "What is your favorite show on Netflix?" I personally do love connecting with people on what I watch. I feel like it does say a lot about a person and it's really neat that we connect with so many people from all over the nation and even the world based on video habits.
